Nearly a century ago, a future first-lady, Catherine "Pat" Ryan, was born in Ely on March 16 1912. In fact she was the only First Lady from Nevada.
She grew up in southern California, went to USC, became a teacher and married future-President Richard Nixon. She urged her husband to appoint a woman to the United States Supreme Court, support the Equal Rights Amendment and became the first first lady to address a national Republican party convention.
Her husband had his own Nevada connections which will be the subject of a future Nevada Yesterdays.
