Las Vegans seek answers, solutions after teen's beating death

Rio Yamat/Associated Press

The beating death of a Rancho High School teenager touched a nerve in Nevada.

Jonathan Lewis Jr. was beaten by a group of teens earlier this month. By the time he got to the hospital, he was braindead. His parents allowed his organs to be donated.

Nine of the suspects are under 18. Some are just 13. Four will be charged as adults. One suspect remains at large.

The heartbroken plea by the boy’s father for people to stop resorting to violence—led to an outpouring of support. A GoFundMe page asking for $25,000 has raised $132,000 as of Nov. 27.

Money won’t heal the loss and pain by so many families broken by the murder. But can anything be done to stop senseless violence?

That’s just one question listeners addressed during State of Nevada’s open mic show with host Joe Schoenmann, who was joined by former Clark County Commissioner and state Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani.

Listeners talked about potentially holding parents of the kids responsible; of how schools could do more; and about the size of Clark County classes and the difficulty that causes when teachers are trying to get through to students.
