Hispanic Heritage Month: Mural on Las Vegas community center highlights immigrant experience

City of Las Vegas

There are a number of events and celebrations planned for Hispanic Heritage Month around Nevada. One is a mural being painted on the East Las Vegas Community Center.

The mural, facing the busy intersection of Eastern and Stewart avenues, is called “Our Collective Strength.”

Originally from Guadalajara, muralist Adry del Rocio has her artwork displayed in 20 different countries. This is her first in Las Vegas.

Del Rocio said the mural is dedicated to the immigrant experience, leaving their homelands in pursuit of a new life.

The mural depicts a woman showing a young girl a nest of eagle chicks as a full-grown eagle with its wings outstretched looks over the nest and the two people.

"The eagle, I chose this animal because it’s important for both countries. Not only for Mexico. So here, the eagle is a very important animal with a lot of symbolism. And that is why I chose this animal," she said.

Behind are cactus and corn, a reference to the Mexican tale “ children of the corn.”

"You’re pulling from the past, but you’re also talking about … the future. Yes, that is why there is this kid, learning. That represents the future. You read the meaning very well because it represents the past, present and future," she said.

And as she says, in the future, we are all children of the world.
