The city of Las Vegas is planning to increase fire safety inspections at apartment buildings and other residential rental properties, especially older ones.
The Las Vegas City Council Wednesday approved stricter enforcement of fire safety and building codes, citing the fire at the Alpine Motel Apartments in December which left six people dead.
Since January 2015, 16 people have died in fires at multi-family dwellings in Las Vegas and all those properties were built under fire codes that became outdated, city officials said.
The city will take a more proactive approach to code enforcement and will focus on aging properties. Officials will examine code enforcement, fire prevention and police data to identify problem properties.
Landlords who don’t make the required fixes face fines as high as $1,000 per day.
