LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Legislature has ended its session and Assembly Minority Leader Jim Wheeler has resigned from his leadership position.
Wheeler, R-Minden, stepped down Tuesday during the caucus' post-session meeting.
He told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he resigned for personal reasons.
Republicans lost key Assembly seats in 2018 that led to them being in the minority in the Legislature.
Democrats control both houses and the governor's mansion.
Wheeler says the caucus needed to shift immediately toward the 2020 election and recruiting candidates to competitive races so that the party can have more influence in the 2021 legislative session.
Three-term Assemblywoman Robin Titus, R-Wellington, was unanimously elected to replace Wheeler.
Wheeler says he wishes Titus "all the luck in the world," but intends to run for re-election for his Assembly seat.
