Lawmakers Pass Education Budget

Both legislative chambers unanimously passed a bill outlining K-12 education funding for the next biennium.

The measure must receive approval from Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak before becoming law, and it’s the first of five budget bills that will mark the end of the current legislative session.

The bill proposes an average basic support guarantee of $6,218 per pupil for next year's budget, an increase of just over 4 percent from the current rate.

When combined with funds from other sources, total-per-pupil spending would rise to just over $10,200 dollars in the next school year.

The measure allocates about $63 million for the Read by Grade 3 program, $89 million for programs including Zoom and Victory schools, and about $327.2 million for a class-size reduction program.
