Nevadans Sue Makers Of Drug Abilify Over Warning Labels

Five Northern Nevadans are suing the manufacturers and distributors of a prescription drug called Abilify.

The lawsuit claims the companies didn’t adequately warn patients that the drug could cause compulsive behavior, including gambling.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reportsthe complaint was filed in Washoe County District Court Wednesday and alleges that patients and doctors weren’t adequately warned of the side effects.

“Pathological gambling” is a warning on the drug’s label in Canada and Europe, but wasn’t in the United States until January 2016.

The lawsuit names Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Abilify is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, depression and autism spectrum disorders.
