Students in Nevada’s second largest school district headed back to class Monday.
As students file in, they might notice some changes at the Washoe County School District. In order to fill a $40 million budget hole, the district made the decision to reduce the number of teachers in the district and increase class size.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports class sizes are being increased by two students in grades 4-12, and the teaching staff is being reduced by 156 positions. But, school officials said those changes and how they actually affect class sizes will vary across the schools. For Sparks High School, the cuts resulted in the loss of nine teachers almost loss of the school’s band program.
