Forest Service: Lovell Canyon Fire 80 Percent Contained

Firefighters are close to controlling a wildfire in a mountain canyon about 25 miles west of Las Vegas.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Ray Johnson said Tuesday that accurate mapping put the fire in Lovell Canyon at 445 acres, or almost three-fourths of a square mile.

Johnson says it's 80 percent contained, with fire lines expected to be completed around the burn area by the end of the day.

No injuries are reported and no structures are threatened.

Johnson says about 100 firefighters are at the scene about 4 miles off State Route 160.

It's between the hamlet of Mountain Springs and Torino Ranch summer camp, but neither is threatened.

Johnson says the cause of the fire is being investigated. Officials think it may be human-caused.
