LV Police To Get New 911 Call Center

Las Vegas police will soon have an additional call center, temporary call center and back-up telephone line.

The department said Tuesday that the safeguards are being put in place after investigating a six-hour breakdown of the region's main 911 emergency and 311 police and fire information systems.

Emergency calls on Feb. 2 to the Las Vegas police were answered by dispatchers in neighboring North Las Vegas and Henderson.

Authorities said the outage happened because of a technical issue that overwhelmed its system, which typically receives hundreds of calls an hour.

The police agency is also upgrading hardware and enhancing monitoring.

Access to the system has also been restricted, with locks on equipment, stricter protocols on vendor access and employees prohibited from connecting outside devices.
