CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Attorney General Adam Laxalt has filed a formal request that the Nevada Supreme Court speed up a decision about the state's halted school choice program.
A Carson City judge put the Education Savings Account program on hold earlier this month, just weeks before money was scheduled to start flowing to families.
The voucher-style program allows parents to claim more than $5,000 in state per-pupil school funds each year and use it for private school tuition.
Opponents argue the Republican-backed program unconstitutionally diverts money from public schools.
Laxalt says parents moved their children to new schools assuming the program would launch in February, and now face the agonizing decision of whether to withdraw them.
He proposed that all court briefs be submitted within 52 days, instead of the standard 180.
