Judge Blocks Wind Turbine Plant Near Searchlight

A judge has prevented plans for a wind turbine project near Searchlight from being built.

The Las Vegas Sun reports U.S. District Judge Miranda Du put a hold on the proposal, citing environmental concerns.

An impact study from the Bureau of Land Management said roughly 100 desert tortoises could be impacted or displaced by the turbine project, but groups seeking to block the project said that number was wrong, and more than 1,000 tortoises could be under threat.

Judge Du agreed, saying the BLM's report had, in her words, "unexplained inconsistencies" regarding the environmental impact of the turbines.

It is unclear when – if at all – the project may resume.
