CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Assembly has rejected a bill that would designate more Nevada elected offices as nonpartisan.
Assembly members voted down AB320 in an 18-24 vote on Tuesday.
Existing law designates some races as nonpartisan, including ones for judges, school board members and regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
The bill would have added to the list of races in which political parties aren't listed. The county clerk, constable, district attorney and assessor would be among the new additions.
Supporters say political affiliation has little bearing on those offices, but opponents say the party designation gives voters more information about a candidate in a low-profile race.
The bill was sponsored by Republican Assemblyman Stephen Silberkraus.
