Lawmakers To Vet Bill Putting State Money To Private Schools

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would allow students to use the state funds designated for their public education at a private school.

Republican Sen. Scott Hammond is sponsoring SB302, which would create education savings accounts. It's up for a hearing on Friday.

The bill would allow students a grant equal to 90 percent of their per-pupil state and local funding allotment. That figure varies by county.

Students could use the state money deposited in the education savings account for tuition, textbooks, tutoring or college savings.

The bill is similar to a measure endorsed by Gov. Brian Sandoval that would create Opportunity Scholarships. That bill would allow businesses a tax credit if they donate to a scholarship fund that would help low-income children attend private schools.
