Legal Marijuana, Background Checks Going To 2016 Ballot

Legislative leaders are indicating that two initiative petitions seeking to extend firearm purchase background checks and legalizing recreational marijuana will go to the ballot in 2016.

Republican Majority Leader Paul Anderson said the petitions wouldn't receive a vote by Friday, which marks the 40-day constitutional deadline for voter petitions. The two measures would then go to the ballot in 2016.

Initiative Petition 1 would legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, and Initiative Petition 2 would require background checks on certain firearm purchases. Both measures met the required petition signing numbers in December.

An Assembly committee passed the two petitions out on Monday without a recommendation, and Republican leaders in the Assembly decided not to hold a vote on the measures before the deadline.
