Nevada Indian Commission officials say additional funding is needed to help preserve a 125-year-old northern Nevada Indian school.
Commission director Sherry Rupert told Nevada lawmakers at an interim budget meeting Wednesday that the funds were needed to help preserve the Carson City-based Stewart Indian School.
Governor Brian Sandoval included the preservation of the school in his major budget initiatives and proposed allocating around $120,000 toward preservation efforts.
The school opened in 1890 and was designed to assimilate Native American children into Caucasian society through academic and vocational training. The school closed in 1980 and is now used by the state's Indian commission as office and meeting space.
The site contains more than 60 buildings and covers around 110 acres. The school is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places.
