The Southern Nevada Health District said Wednesday they’ve confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in Clark County this year. The patient was a man over the age of 50 with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness, the health district said.
There were nine cases reported last year. The health district said mosquitoes tested positive in nine more zip code areas, in addition to the five in early August. West Nile virus spreads through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which get it from the blood of infected birds. It’s not spread person to person and many people who are infected barely notice it.
