Police is Salt Lake City issued a warning about a prepaid money card scam, noting they recently have been getting up to six complaints a day about it. The Police Departmentâs Financial Crimes Unit reports the complaints have a common theme: callers claim they are collection agents representing utilities or government agencies in seeking payment of an overdue bill. To avoid trouble, they say, payment should be made through Monkey Pak, Green Dot or other pre-paid money or debit cards. When, eventually, the victim supplies the fraudster with the cardâs security code the money is quickly withdrawn remotely. Once gone, there is no way to get it back, since the cards are not linked to a bank account or insured against fraud.
