Clark County Schools Seeks More Bus Drivers

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Clark County School District is struggling to fill bus driving positions.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the district has about 70 driver vacancies. That number has steadily increased in recent years as the district has had difficulty attracting people to the nine-month, entry-level position.

Executive director of the district's transportation department, Shannon Evans, says many drivers leave for other jobs behind the wheel, including casino shuttle driving positions. She says they take the jobs during the summer and don't return at the start of the school year.

The district's hiring troubles could also be blamed on a salary freeze that's left drivers and other members of the Education Support Employees Association union without any recent pay raises.

The hourly rate for school bus drivers starts at about $15.
