Dignitaries Break Ground On Las Vegas Veterans Memorial

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The effort to build a Las Vegas Veterans Memorial has officially kicked off with a Veterans Day groundbreaking ceremony.

Gov. Brian Sandoval and Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison joined hundreds of others for the event on Wednesday at the Grant Sawyer state office building.

The memorial will include 18 larger-than-life statues that represent veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror, along with granite walls with narrative quotations.

The project was launched by the veteran-operated business American Shooters Inc., and a nonprofit foundation created in 2009 has been raising the estimated $2.2 million needed to complete it.

It's expected to be finished by Memorial Day 2016.
