A Purpose

A Purpose
Last winter, Harold Bradford had a major medical episode that rendered him unable to walk and turned his hands black and numb — a terrible scenario for an artist. He survived the episode, but recovery takes more than a year. And as the story goes, the medical professionals guiding him through that recovery keep telling him he has a purpose, given how he’d just willed himself through this scary ordeal. Bradford, who was nonetheless still creating art through his recovery, clung to the idea of his purpose, which he identified as the need to continue expressing himself and his talents through his art.
