An American Soundscape: 20th-Century Strings
An American Soundscape: 20th-Century Strings
This string ensemble recital will trace the emergence of a distinctly American musical language through one of chamber music’s most intimate forms. The program will include Antonín Dvořák’s iconic “American” Quartet, composed during his time in the United States and infused with the rhythms, melodies and spirit he encountered in American musical traditions.
From this foundation, the concert follows the shift from European Romanticism toward a new national sound, highlighting George Gershwin’s “Lullaby,” bringing jazz and blues inflections into classical forms by infusing traditional structures with its rhythms, harmonies and expressive warmth. William Grant Still’s “Lyric” Quartet blends classical structure with blues-inspired melodies and spiritual influences.
Performing will be violinists James Anderson and Scott Jackson, violist Arturo Hernández Gómez, and cellist Kimberley Kistler. Tickets must be purchased in advance online.
