Utah To Review Common Core Standards

Utah's school board will review the state's adoption of Common Core education standards and repeal use of a related standardized test after Republican Gov. Gary Herbert recently pushed to drop both the standards and test.

Herbert told the Board of Education at their Friday meeting that the standards have been controversial since Utah adopted them in 2010 without hearing enough public input.

The governor called for a repeal last week though he spent years defending the standards.

Herbert's push for repeal comes as he faces a tough re-election fight against Republican challenger Jonathan Johnson who has pushed to drop Common Core.

The school board voted Friday to review the standards and replace the related SAGE exam that high schoolers take each year. They'll instead take the ACT exam in their junior year.

The Legislature must approve both changes.
