Bill Would Increase Retirement Age For Nevada Public Workers

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Assembly Republicans have proposed raising the retirement age for public workers from 65 to 67.

Assemblyman Glenn Trowbridge is sponsoring AB 312 and presented the bill Monday before the Assembly Government Affairs Committee.

Trowbridge said the bill would increase the retirement age minimum for state public workers to match the federal Social Security retirement age. The increase wouldn't affect firefighters and police officers.

The bill also would change the way post-retirement pay rate is calculated, which Trowbridge said would reduce costs to the system.

The Las Vegas Republican said he wanted to ensure the long-term financial stability of the Public Employees Retirement System.

A number of public worker union lobbyists testified against the bill and said it would make it harder to retain employees over the long term.
