The UNLV Rebel football team is struggling.
Currently 2-5, they haven't put together a winning season since 2013 -- and that was only the second since 2000.
“They can’t even get to mediocre and a lot of times it’s not even close,” Mitch Moss with VSIN told KNPR's State of Nevada.
Moss said he understands people's frustration with a program that cannot seem to come together. But he's not sure that firing head coach Tony Sanchez is the way to go.
He pointed out that Sanchez brought in a lot of booster money when he moved from Bishop Gorman High School.
Moss doesn't support closing the program all together, despite the Rebels miserable record.
“As far as folding the program, as long as they are Division 1 eligible and they can have D1 status I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he said.
And as far as the battle for the Fremont Cannon, Moss doesn't think it's going to turn red anytime soon.
“I wouldn’t be putting money on UNLV to be beating anybody this year – specifically Nevada,” he said.
Oakland Raiders
The Raiders made some moves lately that have some fans up in arms. They traded two top players away for first round draft picks in the future. The idea many believe is to come to Las Vegas with a fresh and young team.
For Moss, there is just one problem with that idea.
“Here’s the problem then, if you go back and look at the history of this team actually getting it right with their first round picks. They did with Khalil Mack. He’s the one guy – essentially since 2004 – that they have nailed,” he said.
And Mack is one of the players the Raiders traded away. Moss said when it comes to picks and trades, the Raiders have had failure after failure.
“Why would you have confidence that this team is actually going to put together a good team when they get to Las Vegas?” he said.
Moss is also not happy with head coach Jon Gruden. He was brought back to coaching after 10 years away as a broadcaster.
Moss says Gruden is showing his players film from the 70s but that is just now football is played right now - even if purists wish it was.
“It’s crazy to me to think that this guy is even qualified to be a head coach at this point in the game and yet to give him $100 million dollars," he said, "It has disaster written all over it.”
VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
The Knights have been off to a slower start this year but as Moss pointed out their first season out performed everyone's expectations.
He said that they have some key players that have been out but now they're coming back to the lineup. Many people believe the Knights are “finally playing like they were late last year down the stretch,” Moss said.

He would also take the Colts over the Raiders simply because the Raiders "are the worst team in football right now."
And on Sunday night, in the Vikings-Saints game, which is a rematch of last season's playoff game, Moss would take the Saints - if the Vikings have as many injuries as they are expected to have.
