Jim Deacon arrived in Las Vegas in 1960 to study desert fish and teach at UNLV. He quickly became much more than just a biologist and professor. He protected some of the desert's rarest species against human development. He was one of the first voices decrying the Southern Nevada Water Authority's proposed pipeline. And last month he received a lifetime acheivement award from the Center for Biological Diversity.
