Occupation

Executive Director, Dr. Robert Hunter International Problem Gambling Center

Political Office

University Regent, District 13

Political Affiliation

Republican

How would you describe yourself to voters?

I am a moderate Republican who is interested in affecting positive change. I believe you should not be running for political office if you are not interested in listening and coming to consensus with those who may hold a different opinion than you. It is vital that we work to find common ground, listen and communicate intelligently and effectively.

What do you see as the top issues in this campaign?

Create more partnerships between business and higher education to strengthen our economy, create jobs, and secure industry support for university programs that educate the next generation of skilled workers. Work to ensure that the Board of Regents is collaborative and cooperative. Finally, I would like to ensure that community college and university campuses are a safe haven for all students to practice their right to free speech.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing the state’s colleges and universities?

Amplifying student success, keeping our brightest minds here in our state and ensuring that there is appropriate funding for our R1 Universities, DRI and community colleges.

In late 2021, former Chancellor Melody Rose filed a hostile workplace complaint alleging sexual discrimination and that some regents were undermining her. An investigation could not substantiate the sexual harassment, but it did note possible ethics violations. It also noted factionalism and tensions among board members. How would you, as a Regent, work to ease tensions on the board?

I think you need to be in the situation to assess best practices for specific conflict resolution. In the past I have handled workplace tensions by listening and knowing your audience. I think you need to speak reasonably to your peers and find common ground.

It is the job of the Board of Regents to be a fiduciary over the University and Community College System. As a Regent, one needs to understand this basic fact and ensure that you govern the board appropriately, thoughtfully and make intelligent decisions that have an end goal of positively affecting the students and faculty. If one loses sight of this, one has lost sight of the reason they chose to be a part of the board. There are ways to articulate this that are not offensive or personal.

What should the board look for in a new Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor?

Someone who is skilled in diplomacy, understand the needs of the system, able to work with the business community, focus on education innovation and be a strong advocate of all NSHE institutions.
