How would you describe yourself to voters?

Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Veteran, Coach and someone who believes everyone should do something to improve the life of someone else.

What do you see as the top issues in this campaign?

Nevada's education system is well known for being poor. The college and university system is no better part of that system. This is not just a K-12 problem. Both of our national universities are in the bottom 50% of universities nationally. We need to change this fact. If Nevada is to diversify our economy and bring in better paying jobs that will offer a better quality of life for those who live here, we must have a college and university system that will encourage companies to relocate here so we can achieve economic diversity.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing the state’s colleges and universities?

Improving the quality of education and an improved work environment. Alternative future funding sources due to expected future budget cuts from the state. Embracing technology like Artificial Intelligence which will become a more significant part of the future of education.

In late 2021, former Chancellor Melody Rose filed a hostile workplace complaint alleging sexual discrimination and that some regents were undermining her. An investigation could not substantiate the sexual harassment, but it did note possible ethics violations. It also noted factionalism and tensions among board members. How would you, as a Regent, work to ease tensions on the board?

I have served on several boards of directors. These include private and public organizations which were both for profit and not for profit. I have been very successful at setting my personal ego and desires aside in order to find common ground so that the board could work together in finding common goals and achieving organizational success. I will work through the factionalisms and tensions within the board to ensure organizational success.

What should the board look for in a new Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor?

Someone with strong leadership skills. Someone with a history of success and who is not looking at the position as a stepping stone for something else. Nevada needs someone who currently makes Nevada home or is seriously considering making a long term commitment to Nevada.
