The owner of the SLS Casino in Las Vegas and the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno is now set to become the new owner of the Arizona Coyotes NHL team.
Alex Meruelo was approved as the new majority owner of the Coyotes during the NHL’s Board of Governors meeting yesterday.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman reaffirmed the league’s belief that the Coyotes need a downtown arena for the troubled franchise to have a future in Phoenix.

The team can’t leave Arizona any time soon due to NHL rules prohibiting new owners from immediately applying for relocation, but Bettman didn’t rule out the long-term possibility of a move. Meruelo ownership deal will close in July.
