Pence Calls Heller A 'Principled Conservative'

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence says U.S. Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada is a "strong, principled conservative voice" who helped repeal a requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or risk a tax penalty.

Pence said at a rally with Nevada Republicans in Carson City that Heller is also "100 percent pro-life" and "strong on borders."

While speaking about immigration, the vice president mentioned the caravan of several thousand Central American migrants traveling toward the U.S. border and said they were coming north "just to challenge our border" and "challenge our sovereignty."

Heller has described himself as being personally against abortion but has said in the past that he backed a woman's right to abortion and had no problem with federal funding for Planned Parenthood. He's also taken more moderate stances on immigration than many of his Republican colleagues.
