Residents Protest City Of Las Vegas Plan To Annex Land

Dozens of people showed up to a special Las Vegas City Council meeting Monday to voice their opposition to a move to annex county land into the city’s hands.

Property taxes were a major concern heard during the nearly four hours of public comment.

The city wants to annex several islands of unincorporated Clark County that are surrounded by city land, which would mean residents of those areas would pay about $150 more in taxes per $100,000 assessed valuation.

Clark County could lose $3 million in revenue, but county commissioners cannot block the annexation. To block the plan, at least 51 percent of the residents have to register opposition. Officials with the city have not yet said how the opposition tally will be announced.
