Will Big Ideas From New Higher Ed Chief Work?

Thom Reilly is the new chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Thom Reilly is the new chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Better access to the university's colleges, better relations with state lawmakers.

Thom Reilly is the new chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, and he comes with ideas that haven't been thoroughly planned or carried out for many decades.

To many, the system has come under more scrutiny and criticism because of perceived political appointments, bad relations with legislators and more.

Reilly comes to his new job, having left a tenured faculty position at Arizona State University. He has also been the head of one of Nevada's largest public institutions, Clark County, where he was the county manager. In that job, he also had to deal with elected officials — the county commissioners — in much the same way he will have to deal with the university system's Board of Regents.

Because of that, many in the system see his hiring as a coup for Nevada.

Reilly, though, will have his hands full.
