A state official told state lawmakers today in a budget presentation that reviving Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository would cost the department of energy under $1.7 billion dollars.
The Las Vegas Review Journal reportsBob Halsted said the state will continue to fight any attempt to restart the Yucca Mountain project as the site to bury the nation’s high-level radioactive waste.
The contentions to the plan include site suitability, the disposal concept, groundwater impacts and transportation issues. Nevada officials estimate that a licensing hearing would require over 400 days, taking an estimated four to five years.
Halsted is the executive director of the Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects, and said Yucca Mountain is totally unprepared to accept nuclear waste.
