The Washoe County School District says campuses throughout Reno’s public school system are facing extreme overcrowding issues.

The Reno Gazette Journal reportsofficials said the district is short on space for the 64,000 students it has now, relying on more than 200 portable classrooms spread across the district’s 93 schools.

Projects such as Tesla and other developments are projected to bring in 55,000 new jobs to the area over the next five years, meaning thousands of new families.

Washoe County voters will decide a question in the November general election requesting that Washoe’s sales tax be increased from 7.725 percent to 8.265 percent, making Washoe’s tax rate higher than any other Nevada county.

Clark County currently charges the most in sales tax at 8.15 percent. All revenue from the tax increase would go to the Washoe County School District to renovate existing campuses and build new schools.
