Gerlach's Volunteer Fire Department Resigns

A firefighter and paramedic will replace the 11 members of a volunteer department in the town of Gerlach who collectively resigned.

Gerlach is the nearest town to where Burning Man is held each year.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Bill Gooch spent 25 years as the fire chief in the northwest Nevada community. He said it's been a challenge coordinating hands-on training with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, contracted to oversee the department.

Monthly training at the department was provided under the city of Reno until three years ago.

Volunteers came from Gerlach, Red Roch, Cedarville, California and Alturas, California. The temporary replacements from the fire protection district will be in Gerlach by Dec. 31, earning time-and-a-half.

Washoe County Manager John Slaughter says the county is exploring more sustainable options in Gerlach, like hiring a full-time fire protection officer there who would coordinate volunteers and training.
