Nevada Releases Limited Data From Common Core-Aligned Tests

Nevada is releasing the very limited student data it has after a testing meltdown left most kids unable to take the Common Core-aligned state exams that are federally mandated.

The Nevada Department of Education said Wednesday there are English scores for approximately 71,000 students and math scores for about 65,000.

The preliminary results show most students performed at "novice" or "developing" levels in math, including 79 percent of eighth-graders. About half performed at proficient or advanced levels in English.

Yet, officials caution that the data can only be used for informational purposes because it represents just a third of Nevada students and it's uncertain how valid the scores even are.

Meanwhile, the state is asking for a rare exemption from the U.S. Department of Education on the testing participation requirement.
