A drop in the number of traffic tickets being handed out is hurting the budget of the Nevada State Supreme Court.

The Nevada Supreme Court is running out of money, and could be insolvent by May 1, according to Chief Justice James Hardesty.

He testified before the Legislature this week, warning legislators of a budget shortfall to the tune of $700,000.

The Supreme Court and some affiliate courts are funded by revenue from Nevada Highway Patrol citations.

But, NHP is writing fewer tickets. The total number of citations has dropped some 21 percent from 2011 to 2014.
