A bill to change the makeup of Nevada's public employee retirement board has died in an Assembly committee after meeting stiff opposition in a hearing last week from Democrats and union representatives.
AB3 came up for a vote Wednesday in the Assembly Government Affairs Committee, but failed to pass.
Republican Assemblyman Randy Kirner introduced the bill, which would bring the number of board members from seven to nine, and specify that two voting members must be non-public employees. The existing board is made up entirely of public employees.
Kirner said the bill wasn't an "indictment" of the board but an attempt to add objectivity and to include outsiders with knowledge of retirement plan funding.
Opponents called the bill unnecessary and say it removes input from recipients of the program.
