Heller Says Margins Tax Will Undermine Tesla Effort

Senator Dean Heller says he fears approval of a 2 percent margins tax on corporations to fund education would undermine efforts to persuade Tesla Motors to build a $5 billion battery plant in Reno. Heller met in Sparks Monday with Granite Construction officials who helped prepare the dirt pad at an industrial east of Sparks.

Heller told reporters that Nevada is well positioned in the race as the only known place where the electric car company has done grading work in preparation for building its "gigafactory." The Nevada Republican refused to say whether he thinks Gov. Brian Sandoval should call a special legislative session to put together an incentive package that could compete with California and Texas. But he says the margins tax on the November ballot that is backed by teachers' unions and others would eliminate one of Nevada's big advantages by giving it a corporate income tax higher than California's.
