Old Equipment In Washoe Schools May Be Dangerous To Students

A new report by the Reno Gazette-Journal shows that many Washoe County Schools have malfunctioning and even non-functioning intercom systems. This issue came to the front last week after the Sparks police investigation showed the intercom system at Sparks Middle School wasn’t working the day of the fatal shooting last October.

According to the Gazette-Journal’s report, less than half of the district’s 93 schools have fully functional intercoms. The newspaper cites documents the district released last year during its campaign urging higher taxes to finance school repairs. They show 35 had intercom systems listed as "expired." Another 25 were listed as "expired but serviceable."

The Sparks Middle School principal says she tried to announce a "Code Red" the day of the shooting but the intercom didn't work.
