Officer's Vest Stopped Bullet Before Las Vegas-Area Man Killed

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer was shot in the chest but was protected by his ballistic vest before a 40-year-old Nevada man who challenged police to a shootout was fatally shot in the garage of a home in suburban Las Vegas.

Audio and body-worn camera video made public Thursday by Henderson police showed officers trying to talk with Mason Paul Workman before the exchange of gunfire late April 19.

The wounded officer was not identified. Police said he was treated for a severe chest bruise after a bullet fired from a handgun lodged in his protective vest.
