The North Las Vegas City Council approved a settlement for a deadly police shooting in 2011.
The city will pay the family of Fernando Sauceda nearly $400,000 to end a lawsuit, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
The shooting occurred minutes into New Year’s Day in 2011 when Sauceda and others were firing their guns into the air to celebrate, according to the lawsuit.
Officers patrolling the area ordered that the guns be dropped, according to police, all but Sauceda complied.
An officer tried to disarm him, but during the altercation fired several rounds, killing Sauceda.
The officer did not face criminal charges in the shooting.
North Las Vegas officials recommended approving the settlement in part to save money on a continuing legal battle and to avoid “any potential risk of an adverse verdict.”
