Governor Steve Sisolak joined 16 other governors in signing a letter of opposition to proposed changes to food stamp rules.
Sisolak and others opposed to the proposed rule change by the U.S. Department of Agriculture say it would negatively impact people who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
The new rules would remove an option for states to automatically enroll people in SNAP who have already qualified for other low-income programs. It would also impose a resource test on all SNAP applications.
The Nevada Department of Welfare estimates the changes would impact about 46,000 people.
Governor Sisolak called the proposed changes “an absolutely unconscionable act that would have dire impacts on the most vulnerable populations in our state.”
