LAS VEGAS (AP) — The superintendent of Las Vegas-area schools has abandoned plans to eliminate 170 campus dean positions districtwide, and will instead require campuses to spend $98 less per pupil.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Clark County School District announced Superintendent Jesus Jara's decision Wednesday.
Jara drew intense criticism and a lawsuit after announcing six weeks ago that he was cutting jobs of all deans supervising middle and high school teachers and safety.
He said he needed to plug a projected $17 million deficit in the district's $2.4 billion budget.
The district is among the nation's largest, with about 320,000 students at 360 schools. Classes resume next month.
A judge is still hearing an employee union lawsuit alleging the dean position cuts decision came during a meeting that violated state open-meetings law.
