LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's Clark County School District says it will cut all 170 dean positions at middle and high schools to close a projected $17 million budget deficit for the next school year.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Superintendent Jesus Jara announced the decision Monday after the district failed to secure the nearly $167 million needed to balance its budget.
Jara says the deans will be able to fill vacant teaching positions.
The deans handle mostly administrative tasks, including teacher evaluations, attendance and discipline.
The executive director of the Clark County Association of School Administrators and Professional-Technical Employees, Stephen Augspurger, says the cuts will burden school administrative teams who are already overworked.
Clark County Education Association spokesman Keenan Korth says the union will issue a statement after reviewing the cuts.
