RENO, Nev. (AP) — A northwest Nevada school district has started assigning students digital learning days when weather conditions keep children at home.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports 9-year-old Hayden Gregory wrote a weather report when 6 inches of snow fell at his Cold Springs house, leading to the Washoe County School District closing 10 schools Wednesday.
The third-grader was part of the district's first-ever digital learning day where teachers send home 12 possible assignments, requiring students to complete three.
Hayden's other options included writing a poem about snow, doing 15 minutes of vocabulary practice, or watching a favorite TV show and writing five sentences about it.
The district says the plan eliminates the need to add makeup time at the end of the school year for snow days.
