Governor Brian Sandoval has issued an executive order that deals with requiring energy and mining companies to offset impacts of their activities on sage grouse habitat.
The order seeks to extend Nevada’s mitigation requirement to projects on federal land, which the Trump administration largely repealed earlier this year.
The Sagebrush Ecosystem Council will meet this week to create regulations that will require developers to mitigate their land disturbances through Nevada’s Conservation Credit System.
A day before Sandoval issued his executive order, the Trump administration released a plan that removed certain protections for the nearly-endangered bird, easing restrictions on development as well as oil and gas drilling.
That plan also gave the state authority to work with federal land managers on mitigations strategies.
