City Of Las Vegas To Request Tax, Service Charge Hikes To Pay For Homeless Services

The Las Vegas City Council is headed to the 2019 legislative session with a request to raise certain taxes to be able to address homelessness in the valley.

The council voted to request legislation that would allow the city to increase the real property transfer tax and a sewer service charge.

The Nevada Current reports the revenue would be used to fund transitional housing, affordable housing and the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center.

If both houses of the Legislature and the governor approve the request, it would allow the city to increase the sewer surcharge and increase the real property transfer tax in Clark County.

The sewer surcharge increase would amount to about $22 a year per household and generate roughly $5 million.
