Operations Suspended At Gold Quarry Mine Following Slide

CARLIN, Nev. (AP) — A mining company has suspended operations at an open pit mine in Nevada following ground movement at the site.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the slide occurred earlier this month on the Gold Quarry pit's southwest wall, and Newmont Mining Corp. is evaluating the event.

The company says no one was harmed as a result of the slide, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the State of Nevada were notified after the event.

Employees working in the Gold Quarry pit have been reassigned to other areas of the Carlin operations, and personnel from the Chukar underground mine at the bottom of the pit were relocated to the surface.

Newmont says timing to recommence activities at the Gold Quarry pit and Chukar underground will not be confirmed until technical assessments have been completed.
