Federal Authorities End Emergency Roundup Of Horses In Cold Creek

Federal authorities have ended their emergency roundup of wild horses this week in the range near Cold Creek.

In total, 148 mustangs were captured since May 11.

Most of the horses were taken to a Bureau of Land Management holding facility in California.

Seventeen of the horses had to be euthanized during the roundup because they were deemed too emaciated to be nursed back to health.

The BLM and the U.S. Forest Service said the emergency roundup was necessary because the herds were at risk of starvation due to depleting resources.

Wild horse advocates in the state fiercely opposed the roundup, many fear the horses will eventually be sent to slaughter.
